Zitamar Daily: Another attempt to make a hub of Nacala
Share

President Nyusi’s visit to the UAE is drawing to a close. It included a visit to Dubai port, run by local port company DP World — the main operator of the Port of Maputo, which has been significantly improved in the last few years, and is now a major success story. Nyusi now wants DP World to do the same for Nacala, which could become a regional hub.

A previous attempt at making Nacala a transport hub has so far flopped, with the large and modern Nacala airport still only hosting flights to and from Maputo. But were oil or gas to be found off Angoche, Nacala would gain a new relevance — in addition to its growing importance for Malawi, which is increasingly using the port while diplomatic relations with Mozambique are at an all-time high.

Agenda:

  • Today: President Filipe Nyusi’s third and final day of visit to the UAE

  • Today: Mozambique plays Senegal in beach soccer semis

    • Mozambique finished second in its group, having beaten Malawi and lost to Morocco. Senegal is unbeaten so far and a favourite for the tournament

Mozambique taking on Morocco in the group stage
  • 19-29 October: Tanzania People's Defence Force holds field exercises in the southeastern regions of Lindi, Mtwara, and Ruvuma
