President Nyusi among thousands testing positive as omicron sweeps Mozambique; SADC leaders to review military mission in Cabo Delgado
Welcome to Zitamar’s daily Mozambique briefing for 5 January 2022
Agenda:
Friday: SADC to hold virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to review the progress and mandate of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM)
The most likely outcome of this meeting is the renewal of the SADC mandate. It’s too early to be sure that Mozambican forces alone can handle the situation in areas under SADC protection, or those under Rwandan protection. The natural decision would be to extend the presence of the SADC contingent, despite increased nervousness on the SADC side over budget issues and concerns over when exactly Mozambican forces would be capable of taking over. SADC and external forces would like to see Mozambican forces performing better, and increased clarity over what the government is doing — including the northern development agency ADIN.
