Nyusi ‘regrets’ police excesses
Mozambique’s President has reasons to urgently improve his image as a defender of human rights
Good afternoon. Frelimo is getting ready for a meeting of its Central Committee tomorrow — and President Nyusi has moved to reduce some tensions resulting from the police brutality last weekend, by openly coming out against the way the police responded.
Nyusi has reasons to urgently improve his image as a defender of human rights. First off, some of his comrades on the Central Committee are very unhappy at the police brutality witnessed on Saturday.
Following the Central Committee, Nyusi will also fly to New York to participate in meetings closing out Mozambique’s month as president of the United Nations Security Council.
And finally, with hopes that the LNG projects in Cabo Delgado will soon restart, Nyusi does not need the events of last week to provide any further complication, as TotalEnergies’ appointed humanitarian expert, Jean-Christophe Rufin, presents his report.
Agenda:
Tomorrow: First of two days of the Frelimo Central Committee meeting, to be held at the party's central school in Matola.
Tomorrow: Rearranged public hearing to disclose the social and environmental performance of the Balama graphite mine, by Twigg Exploration and Mining, at 9am through virtual via Microsoft Teams platform
