Good afternoon. President Nyusi has been in Asia this week at the Indian Ocean Rim Association meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia - and next week will again fly east for a state visit to Japan.

Back home, mining projects appear to be taking off, with more excitement in the graphite sector over Mustang’s latest discovery. Questions remain over whether the world market really has an appetite for all the graphite found so far in Mozambique, but the commodity does look set to become one of the country’s major exports in the next few years.

Savannah Resources’ sand mining projects in Inhambane and Gaza provinces are also making steady progress after the company decided to move ahead with its scoping study before it finalises the details of its proposed joint venture with Rio Tinto. It is now planning to set up a pilot plant for ‘proof of concept’.

In conflict-hit Gorongosa, a Portuguese construction company says it is ready to reopen its stone quarry now that peace has returned to the area.
