Good afternoon. The whereabouts of senior Renamo member Manuel Lole remain unknown after his abduction on 12 July – contradicting reports circulating that he had been found dead in Sofala province. Renamo spokesman Antonio Muchanga told Zitamar this afternoon that party representatives went to identify a body expected to be Lole’s – but found instead the dead body of another party member.

While developments on the conflict between Renamo and the government remains depressing, news that the Prosecutor General’s office plans to investigate the $2 billion borrowed by ProIndicus, EMATUM, and MAM was greeted as a pleasant surprise by many. It remains to be seen how serious the investigation will be, but an atmosphere of optimism currently prevails.

Government approval for a solar power plant in Zambezia province looks like more good news. If it manages to tie up financing from various multilateral lenders, it will be another boost to Mozambique’s northern electricity grid.

Down south, Delonex looks set to be the first of the oil and gas companies granted exploration concessions in INP’s 5th round last year to kick off exploration activities. It will consult later this month on plans for seismic surveys on its onshore straddling Maputo and Gaza provinces.

Finally, another transport sector privatisation is moving ahead, with the launch of a tender to upgrade and operate four small airports at some of Mozambique’s top tourist destinations.
