Mozambique 10 June: No sign of peace
Good afternoon. The peace talks taking place between negotiating teams of the government and opposition Renamo hit a stumbling block on Wednesday afternoon, and it is now unclear when they will return to the table.

As ever, the Mozambican people are paying the price for a lack of agreement. But even without peace some refugees are returning home from Malawi to avoid being moved to a refugee camp further from the border.

A second Vale train was fired upon this week in Sofala province – in the same area as the first attack on Monday. The government blames Renamo, and Renamo blames the government – but evidence has emerged that Dhlakama himself authorised the attack.

Aside from the conflict, Mozambique’s debt crisis dominates headlines about the country, but infrastructure financiers meeting in Johannesburg this week insist there is still scope for projects to get financed – as long as the government is not involved.
