Police prepare for Azagaia demonstrations at football game between Mozambique and Senegal
Good afternoon. The police in Maputo are back in action today, with a large contingent heading for the national stadium for this evening’s football match between Mozambique and Senegal. The turnout seems higher than usual — probably because there is a popular movement to turn it into another homage to the recently deceased rapper, Azagaia.
It seems there’s something of a battle of the mourners going on in Maputo today. This morning was the funeral of former Prime Minister, Pascoal Mocumbi. For that event, mourners apparently from the Frelimo women’s association, the OMM, were bussed to the funeral, in an apparent attempt to bump up the numbers of those paying respects to one of Frelimo’s own.
Hopefully, in the light of President Nyusi’s words late last week regretting how the police squashed the Azagaia marches, football fans and Azagaia fans will be able to pay tribute in peace this evening. If so, it could be a release of tension that the country, or at least Maputo, needs.
