Good afternoon. The conflict in Cabo Delgado experienced a relative lull over the holiday period, though there was still plenty to report — as Cabo Ligado does today in its first Weekly report since the break, covering four weeks. See below to access the report.
One of the biggest developments over the period was the launch of a major counter-insurgency operation by the Mozambican and allied militaries, known as Vulcão IV. That action appears to have provoked a reaction now from the insurgency, with a series of attacks by insurgents in villages either side of the Messalo River, as we report today.
Elsewhere in Mozambique, unresolved issues from last year linger on — with the public sector pay scale still causing problems, Renamo guerrillas still unsure of their pensions, and ‘chapa’ drivers still complaining that they are not being paid subsidies.
