A bumper harvest in 2021
As the new agricultural season starts, Mozambican farmers look back on one of their best years ever
Good afternoon. Today we highlight some good news: President Nyusi welcomed the start of the 2022/2023 agricultural season on Tuesday armed with figures showing that last year was one of the best ever for Mozambican agriculture, which grew in value by 7.4% overall. At a launch event in Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado, Nyusi announced that maize and rice production increased by 31% and 19% respectively and that agricultural exports overall grew by 24.4%, or $113m.
However, Mozambique’s trade balance in agriculture remains in the red as the country is still reliant on foreign wheat, rice and palm oil, which amount to 60% of imports.
Agenda:
Today: President Nyusi continues his state visit to Finland
Today: The defence ministers of Mozambique and Zambia, Cristóvão Artur Chume and Ambrose Lwiji Lufuma, meet in Lusaka.
Thursday: The National Institute of Statistics launches its annual socio-demographic survey.
